You may have heard news reports in the media and online recently that talk about the health effects of EMFs. Do you know what EMFs are? And how do EMFs cause health problems – if this is the case? We take a look at the effects of EMFs and discuss whether you need to take steps to protect yourself from this radiation.

What are EMFs?

Before discussing exactly what EMFs are, we will look at the structure of the body. Inside the body, electrical activity helps numerous functions continue and assists in helping you live. Electrical currents within the body are crucial to survival. But if there is a disturbance to this crucial network, it can result in health problems. Since we are primarily electrical beings, when we are exposed to even low levels of electrical frequencies from outside the body it disrupts the smooth functioning inside the body. Even these very small changes can be significantly problematic over time.

Electrical equipment, power lines, cell phones, wireless networks, and other electrical devices all emit electromagnetic radiation. When you are exposed to this radiation, which is also called electric and magnetic fields (EMFs), you may suffer.

What Can EMFs Do To Your Health?

Low frequency electromagnetic radiation can significantly affect bodily processes. For example, it can affect your circadian rhythm which controls your body clock. This affects melatonin production. If you are intensely exposed to electromagnetic fields you end up generating less melatonin, and this can result in depression and fatigue. Also, your DNA has been demonstrated to be affected by EMFs. Low levels of electromagnetic radiation are demonstrated to interfere with the immune responses in your body, which can result in a greater likelihood of disease. Prolonged exposure to EMFs has been linked with an increased risk of cancer, heart disease, dementia, and other serious health problems.

Is There Anything You Can Do To Limit the Risk?

No one is going to be able to stay away from EMFs completely. But you can gain levels of emf protection that will help you minimise adverse health risks. For example, the danger of exposure lowers as you get further away from the source so it is a good idea to put up distance barriers between you and significant sources of EMFs like power lines. You can also put up physical barriers by using special paints and protective coatings, cell phone protection, and protective accessories and garments. It also helps to limit the amount of time you spend using electrical gadgets and minimise cell phone use to help cut down the risk of problems developing over time.
